Basics

Do I have to focus on my breath to meditate?

The breath is particularly useful because it is always there, making it a good place to begin. Depending on the technique, though, you may focus not only on sensations such as the breath or other physical feelings, but also on a particular object of thought or imagination. This could be a visualisation, a mantra, or the wish that others may be happy.
