Getting enough sleep should generally be a firm goal in a healthy lifestyle. Adequate sleep is also an important foundation for meditating well. Tiredness during meditation is not automatically a bad thing. Sometimes it is only when we become still that we notice how tired we actually are.
There are other things you can do as well. An upright seat without back support is often recommended for this very reason: it can help you stay awake and attentive. Keeping your eyes open, changing the time of day, moving a little beforehand, or taking a few conscious breaths already helps many people. If you still become tired every time, you could also try walking meditation, for example.
Should you meditate when tired?
You do not need to force yourself through a session. You can choose a different time or try walking meditation. If you are short of sleep, meditation does not replace that sleep.
Sometimes slowing down makes you notice how tired you are. Falling asleep can happen. To practise while awake, you can adjust your posture or timing without judging yourself for feeling tired.
